Exploring Burns Shopping Mall: A Kilmarnock Landmark

Burns Shopping Mall, located in the heart of Kilmarnock, offers a unique shopping experience, though opinions about the mall's condition and offerings vary widely. Here's an overview of what to expect when visiting this shopping center.

On-Site Services

The mall features a variety of on-site services including shops like Argos, Home Bargains, and a pound shop. While some visitors appreciate these options, many have noted the lack of variety due to several vacant units, making for a less vibrant atmosphere.

Accessibility Features

A significant advantage of Burns Shopping Mall is its wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible car park. The layout allows for easier navigation for those using mobility aids, although some reviews suggest that better signage and maintenance could further enhance accessibility.

Visitor Experiences

Reviews present a mixed bag of experiences at the mall. Some patrons commend the friendly staff and the convenience of having essential services under one roof, such as pharmacies and grocery stores. However, numerous comments express disappointment over the mall's run-down appearance, with descriptions likening it to "war-torn" conditions and highlighting issues like leaking roofs and poor security. One visitor mentioned, “It’s functional as all the shops I need are under one room,” pointing out the practical aspect despite the aesthetic shortcomings.

Concerns About Safety and Cleanliness

Many reviews reflect concerns regarding safety, particularly due to the presence of unruly behavior around the mall. Comments about drug-related activities and encounters with loitering individuals have been prevalent, leading some shoppers to recommend avoiding the area if possible. Regular mention of the scent of urine and cleanliness indicates ongoing maintenance challenges. Nevertheless, some customers appreciate the cleanliness maintained by the staff, who work diligently to keep the shopping environment tidy, even amidst the challenges.

Additional Amenities

While the mall features essential amenities like toilets, some patrons have pointed out that their availability can be inconsistent, which can be a disadvantage for families or those needing regular access. Reviewers have suggested that updates to restroom facilities could enhance the overall experience.

Conclusion: Is Burns Shopping Mall Worth a Visit?

While Burns Shopping Mall offers convenient on-site services and accessibility features, its reputation is marred by issues of safety and aesthetics. It holds potential for improvement through revitalization efforts that could attract more shoppers and fill the vacant units. For those in Kilmarnock, it remains a spot worth visiting for specific needs, particularly on rainy days when its sheltered environment offers a brief escape from the elements. However, cautious visitors should be prepared for the complexities that accompany its current state.

I must confess that, much like most things in the shopping centre, they are starting to appear rather neglected and a bit outdated. However, despite the fact that the mall is in need of some modernization to bring it up to speed with the 21st century, it still looks quite impressive compared to the other shops on the high street. Some of the stores are closed and many are in need of a makeover and new equipment. Sadly, this seems to be a recurring issue throughout Kilmarnock's shopping venues. I suppose online shopping and high rental prices are having an impact.

This shopping mall is not the best, especially when you have kids. The bathrooms are terrible, 70% of the shops are closed, I have never seen a shopping center like this before. 👎

This shopping mall offers a variety of budget-friendly stores for home goods and snacks. You'll find a new bookstore with unique craft gifts, a charity shop, phone retailers, and even a small Greggs bakery. Don't miss the sunny courtyard, perfect for relaxing during the summer months. Also, there's a trendy clothing store catering to young shoppers.
Bruce Patterson (12/08/2025, 09:27):
Although the mall is well-kept and fully occupied with stores like Argos, Home Bargains, The Works, and Poundland, it could definitely benefit from a significant makeover. It's handy being located right next to the bus station, though.
Brian Butler (09/08/2025, 08:23):
Quite unfortunate to see so many establishments closing down in the shopping mall. It is truly a pity.
Dennis Lee (07/08/2025, 23:16):
What an absolute shame to see that our beloved shopping mall in Kilmarnock has lost its spark and no longer captivates the community. Times are tough, no doubt about it, but a revitalization is desperately needed to bring back the shoppers.
Megan Myers (07/08/2025, 21:15):
Visited the shopping mall for a quick and convenient photo session. However, quite disappointed with the limited parking space!
David King (04/08/2025, 18:59):
This lovely little shopping mall could do with a spruce up. Quite a few shops have shut down and remain closed. The local council doesn't seem to care much and doesn't handle the renting situation well, which I reckon is quite pricey, leading to many closures in Killie. They also really need to address the issue of the occasional whiff of urine near the bus station exit.
Gary Stewart (04/08/2025, 00:46):
This delightful little shopping mall is a breeze to navigate. The mall staff, not the store employees, are incredibly helpful and friendly. However, it does seem to lack in cleanliness as the mall often appears quite dirty.
Julie White (03/08/2025, 21:03):
Some bloomin' decent shops, I must say. However, the blokes and birds lingerin' around who have a penchant for drugs and ain't bein' shooed away is a bit off-puttin'. The freshly spruced up toilets, while newly done, are overpowered by the strong scent of air freshener. For someone like me with a spot of bother breathing, it poses a bit of a hazard, if you know what I mean. And to top it all off, can't even use the disabled loos without ringin' up for a key, which ain't always possible. Once again, all on account of those drug addicts misusin' the facilities and not gettin' the boot.
Janet Alexander (01/08/2025, 20:32):
This place was rather disappointing. I wouldn't opt to shop here again. I made the journey with hopes of picking up some items from Thd Works that were said to be in stock, but after a 24-mile round trip, I discovered they were actually out of stock. The mall had a very limited selection overall.
Allison Green (30/07/2025, 11:17):
Great selection of stores in the shopping mall and convenient parking facilities make it easy for a pleasant one-hour shopping experience. Don't forget to check out the charming pub located at the end of the mall for a well-deserved break after your shopping spree!
Samantha Hughes (28/07/2025, 19:35):
I must say, this shopping mall has definitely seen better days in recent years. It's disappointing to see shops closing and the lack of staff in the restrooms. While the mall is kept clean thanks to the hard work of the cleaning crew, it's a far cry from the bustling hub it used to be with numerous quality stores and a range of activities. Nowadays, it seems like you only visit out of necessity rather than for enjoyment. It's a shame to witness this decline.
Diane Cruz (27/07/2025, 13:59):
An absolute bustling shopping district! So many shops to browse through, it's quite the treat. And the cherry on top? It's conveniently located near a bus station. What more could you ask for?
Brittany Butler (27/07/2025, 04:51):
Not a great experience at the moment.
Austin Gray (24/07/2025, 08:42):
The shops are absolutely fantastic, and the prices are much more affordable compared to other shopping destinations I've visited. Additionally, there are convenient restroom facilities available, located right by the bus station and the bustling high street. Plus, there are plenty of other shops nearby as you enter the mall.
Theresa Lopez (24/07/2025, 07:52):
It was a wonderful spot once, but it seems to have taken a turn for the worse. The bus station sits right at the Mall's entrance, often attracting quite a crowd. The roof has been leaking for a couple of months now, with warning signs and barriers set up for safety reasons. Sadly, there aren't many stores left inside either...
Leonard Johnson (23/07/2025, 22:26):
Shopping malls may seem a tad old-fashioned compared to the shopping parks located out of town, but it is quite delightful to come across smaller shops. The persistent power companies and TV broadband salespeople can be quite bothersome as they continuously approach you, simply carrying out their duties, albeit a bit irritating nonetheless.
Albert Kim (20/07/2025, 22:03):
Kilmarnock: the town solely sustained by revenue generated from parking fines. It's no surprise it's struggling!
Sophia Garcia (19/07/2025, 15:34):
The shopping mall is a bit dull and could use some sprucing up. However, it is bustling with lots of shops, and the vacant spaces are usually filled up quite promptly. The management and security team are extremely pleasant and handle any concerns promptly.
